Thyroid dysfunction- hypothyroidism

Did you know that your thyroid is the powerhouse of your body that increases and decreases every cellular process? That’s insane!

Nutrition deficiencies and environmental toxins can leave you experiencing any number of seemingly vague Thyroid symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, constipation, infertility and miscarriage. Sadly your GP can’t do anything for these symptoms until they develop into a serious pathology and your TSH is well out of range (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). It can take up to 10 years for these symptoms to develop into Thyroid Disease; that’s 10 years of suffering through these symptoms before you can get help. Unless you see either a Nutritionist or a Naturopath who can get to the bottom of why your thyroid is not functioning optimally and why you’re experiencing seemingly vague symptoms.

Hypothyroidism

Subclinical Hypothyroidism is where your TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is elevated and T3, T4 are still within the normal range.

Hypothyroidism is classified as TSH that is raised and T3, T4 that are reduced. Antibodies can be present in both cases and can indicate an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto Disease.

Thyroid nutrients

Here are a few key nutrients needed for thyroid function; selenium, iodine, tyrosine, and vitamin D.

These nutrients can be found in Brazil nuts (make sure they are from Brazil), fish, eggs, seaweed, and some dairy products such as cheese.

Improve thyroid function

Meditation, yoga, pilates, walking or any other stress-reducing exercise you might prefer.

Exercise in general can help to increase your energy, improve your metabolism and increase your bodies sensitivity to thyroid hormone (this is a good thing!).

We are here to actually listen to you and make sure you’re being heard and getting the help you need. No person is the same, so therefore a GP’s standard approach to things can sometimes not be the answer you need. Nutrition and Naturopathy believe in understanding why you’re experiencing these symptoms and getting to the root of what is going on, instead of just treating the symptoms themselves.
